The CLBM provides training services for executives to help them correctly understand and lead Lean transformations.

Our approach to Lean leadership is practical and taught by people that have years of industry experience applying Lean in both manufacturing and service settings.

Our workshops help senior managers achieve rapid culture change by integrating both the technical (tool) and leadership (behavioral) aspects of the Lean management.

Lean leadership training is available by special arrangement, typically for small groups of 10-20 senior managers from a single company, and are customized to meet your specific needs.

Why CLBM Lean Leadership Training is Better

Most leadership training courses dive right into the Lean tools and present unfamiliar concepts and confusing jargon. They mix Lean and non-Lean tools and concepts together, which obscure the intent of Lean and makes it hard to understand how to correctly implement Lean.

Most training focuses too much on manufacturing aspects, which turns off senior managers that do not have manufacturing responsibilities. So most of the senior management team is left behind.

Further, most training courses treat Lean as "great tools for the manager's took kit," which demonstrates an enormous misunderstanding of Lean. For these and other reasons, the quality of most Lean training courses is very poor, though the price is usually quite high.

As a result, most people trained this way leave with wrong impressions and inaccurate or incomplete information. In addition to being a waste of money, you will almost certainly waste time as you struggle in your Lean implementation efforts.

Our Lean leadership training, the result of over a decade of breakthrough thinking and continuous improvement, is designed to eliminate these undesirable outcomes.

Comments from Executives

“The program that Bob put together was outstanding. He gave great talks, had excellent visuals, and there was great interaction among the participants. The workbook and handouts were excellent, and the homework assignments were thought-provoking and relevant. I give the training the highest marks. What we learned is going to help us improve every aspect of our business.”

"The training opened my eyes to the second element of Lean management – Respect for People. I begin and end the day by reviewing the self-assessments and daily reminders. They help set the stage for the day by reminding myself to keep the change going, and provides for a self evaluation at the end to determine areas in which I need to work on."

Practical Lean LeadershipSM

This training course thoroughly de-mystifies the art of Lean leadership and shows senior managers how to accelerate their Lean transformation and achieve the desired culture change.

We focus on teaching the tacit knowledge that you must learn to become a Lean leader. Everyone else focuses on the explicit knowledge related to Lean tools, when in fact the critical component for success is the tacit Lean leadership knowledge.

We offer the simplest and most practical approach to Lean leadership available anywhere.

Executives learn how to lead a Lean organization using the pioneering approach Bob Emiliani developed in 1995 and has steadily built upon since then. Participants will learn:

  • A simplified approach to leadership that is fully consistent with Lean principles and practices.
  • How to differentiate between leadership behaviors that add value and behaviors that are waste.
  • Understand leadership in terms of information flows.
  • Major mistakes to avoid in your Lean transformation.
  • Identify and eliminate metrics, policies, and practices that are inconsistent with Lean and prohibit culture change.

The training is available in two versions: long version (four 4-hour modules) or short version (one 8 hour module). It includes interactive lecture, break-out activities, and simple homework assignments, as well as specific and actionable direction for improving leadership capabilities.

Step 1
4-Module Training Program, four hours per module.
For the senior management team.

Session 1 - The Lean Management System. Understanding Lean as a management system and review of the common misconceptions senior managers have about Lean.

Session 2 - Lean Leadership Beliefs, Behaviors, and Competencies. Detailed description of Lean leadership beliefs, behaviors, and competencies correlated to Lean principle and practices, and compared to non-Lean leadership beliefs, behaviors, and competencies.

Session 3 - Kaizen, Executive Standardized Work, and Lean Metrics. Deep-level discussion of kaizen meaning, purpose, and outcomes, rationale and structure of executive standardized work, and ensuring metrics are consistent with Lean.

Session 4 - Lean Like Music and Respect for People. An innovative and in-depth comparison of Lean management to music, plus a close examination of the inter-relationship between "Respect for People" and "Continuous Improvement" principles.

Step 2 (Optional)
Ensuring Executive Buy-In.
For the CEO, President, or senior management team. A review of the many small and large factors that inhibit executive buy-in. Top executives gain a comprehensive understanding of commitments and adjustments that will have to be made to ensure a successful Lean transformation. Duration: 4 hours.

Customer Comments

A service company president describes the value of CLBM Lean leadership training:

"Your training was and continues to be of great value. It gave us a framework for how to work better together. You provided us with tools to implement what we were learning about and how to apply it, and guided us to additional resources so we could learn more. Most importantly, you showed everyone that Lean would work for them. It was not just something that would benefit only one person or one group. Your passion for the subject comes through in the training. You have excellent methods for communicating the information and have the ability to reach all types of learners. You left us with some great training aids and reminders, and you have shown a continuing interest in us. That is very important because you help to keep us focused on Lean. You have been responsible for helping this company greatly."

A manufacturing company president describes the value of CLBM Lean leadership training:

"The training brought attention of Lean to the forefront and brought home (again) the importance of what people see you do and leading by example, but at a different level. It also reminded us of what is possible to achieve. You addressed issues of Lean that are not covered in other training, and put ordinary things in an extraordinary light. You challenged our comfort zone, and also put ‘soft’ issues more into a 'hard' issue realm."

Training Perspective

We wanted to create a different type of Lean leadership training experience that would be much simpler to understand, more practical, and also very specific and actionable. Our training is unique because it is firmly rooted in Lean thinking - not the more common organizational behavior or organizational development approach to leadership development. We also wanted to highlight Lean principles - especially the "Respect for People" principle which is missing in other training programs. The result is an authentic new contribution to the body of Lean knowledge that will help your Lean transformation efforts.
